Around fifty cars have been marked with what appears to be human blood in the German municipality of Hanau near Frankfurt, according to police.
Vehicles, walls and mailboxes were defaced, sometimes with prohibited symbols, they reported in a official communication.
Police state they were contacted during the night on Wednesday night, when a individual noticed that a vehicle in the Lamboy district of Hanau had been smeared with a reddish-hued liquid.
The substance had been placed in the shape of a banned symbol, they reported.
Police then located multiple other smeared cars and house walls in the surrounding area.
Swastikas are prohibited in Germany under regulations banning the visible presentation of Nazi-era symbols.
Police report preliminary tests show the liquid was probably blood from a person.
"Currently there is no lead as to where it came from; authorities are not yet cognizant of any physical harm in association with the event," they stated.
Municipal representatives said they were attempting "to solve the mystery" and have appealed to the public for tips.
A senior official commented the attack left him speechless and had to be solved quickly.
"This event hits the center of Hanau and revives the trauma of the extremist terrorist attack half a decade ago," he posted on social media, mentioning the killing of nine individuals by a gunman focusing on individuals of immigrant origin in February 2020.
