Individuals Coming Off Weight-Loss Jabs Regain Weight Four Times Faster Compared to Those on Conventional Diets

Obesity treatment involves long-term strategies.

New research indicates that patients who discontinue blockbuster GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover shed pounds much more quickly than those who halt conventional lifestyle regimens.

Published data in a leading health publication points out that while overweight individuals can lose a large proportion of their body weight while on the medication, the mass returns at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.

"Individuals using such treatments need to be cognizant of the potential of quick weight regain when the therapy is stopped," warns lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of recovery implies a return to starting weight within about one and a half years.

Comparing Approaches

The research, which reviewed 37 of trials involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the effects of GLP-1 agonists with conventional dieting.

Scientists note that people who shed pounds through dieting typically experience a slower weight regain—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.

Explaining the Fast Rebound

Doctors suggest the way of the injections accounts for the accelerated rebound.

GLP-1 drugs copy a natural hormone called GLP-1, which controls appetite.

"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 concentrations several times higher than normal could lead to the system to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous hormone, and could diminish responsiveness to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.

"Withdrawal of this GLP-1 'fix' results in appetite is uncontrolled, making excessive eating a significant risk."

A Lifelong Issue?

Medical guidelines suggest the jabs for people with obesity-related health risks, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.

Many experts say that, given the significant potential of relapse, the treatment might need to be long-term.

This view is echoed by drug manufacturers, who state that the findings "emphasize the persistent character of obesity," similar to managing conditions like hypertension.

Patient Experiences

Users who have stopped the jabs report a sudden resurgence of hunger.

"I experienced something that goes on and you're instantly ravenous," recalled an individual.

This challenge is exacerbated if users have not adopted permanent lifestyle or habit modifications during therapy.

Significant Interest

Figures indicate that millions of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with demand being substantial.

  • Use is greater among females than men.
  • The middle-aged demographic shows the highest level of interest.
  • Many access the medications through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

Finally, researchers caution that while these medications are potent agents for weight loss, they are not a standalone fix and long-term success relies on integrated lifestyle support.
