A fatal train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite critical opposition regarding the rapidity and execution of the country's flagship public works projects.
The disaster happened on the Interoceanic Train, a route developed to link the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was created to offer an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, intended to promote regional growth in the area.
“We will thoroughly investigate the reasons behind this accident,” stated the head of state.
The president announced that, of the around 250 people on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in serious condition. The president stated plans to travel to Oaxaca to speak with those affected.
Major Initiative of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone development scheme of the former leader, whose term finished the previous year. This project was intimately linked to his leadership's strategic goals for the southeastern region.
Another ambitious train initiative from that period, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the comprehensive effort to revitalize the economy of a historically poorer part of the country.
Building Management and Safety Concerns
The development of both train projects was overseen by the army, marking a dramatic increase of its role in public projects. They were executed at an accelerated rate, beating forecasts to be at least partly inaugurated before the end of that administration.
However, this accelerated timeline had also fueled persistent concerns over operational security.
- Sunday's derailment was the third event on the Interoceanic Train this year.
- This involves an earlier collision this month when a train hit a truck at a railroad crossing.
- The other major rail project has also experienced a couple of non-deadly derailments.
Appeals for Review and Suspension
In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the leader of a major opposition party demanded an prompt suspension in the building and running of all comparable projects.
This halt was proposed while awaiting a comprehensive independent investigation. The party emphasized that the tragedy "demands immediate answers."
In reaction, the president insisted that the train had been functioning in full adherence to all security protocols. Commitments were given that the government would continue to be "responsible" in both the construction and management of these vital initiatives.
