Pat Cummins Expected to Feature a Major Role in Ashes Series

Test match action

Pat Cummins has secured over 300 dismissals in 71 five-day games with an impressive average.

Australia's chair of selectors the selector has declared that pace spearhead Cummins will be a central figure in this winter's Ashes series.

Speculation had been growing that Cummins might sit out due to a persistent back stress problem that had not yet healed.

Earlier indications from the squad suggested no definitive call had been made regarding his involvement, with the extended contest scheduled to begin on November 21 in the WACA.

He revealed that Cummins is "building up" and felt positive about the prospects of participating.

"It's clear that the window is narrowing and there are permutations at play, not only the back issue, but additional elements," he commented.

"It's positive. [We are] really confident that he's going to play a major part. Hopefully starting in Perth. Otherwise, we'll reassess."

Injury History

Cummins was ruled out Australia's limited-overs series against New Zealand and India recently after scans revealed a stress reaction in his back.

Previous incidents include of recurring issues, with flare-ups in 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2015-16 causing him to miss three Australian summers in four years.

Cummins stated he would be bold in recovery efforts in his rehabilitation process to make the squad for the Ashes.

Bailey noted that there was no confirmation if he had started his bowling workouts as part of his comeback but acknowledged it was "pressing" for him to be fit for the first Test.

Alternative Arrangements

In case of absence, ex-skipper Smith will take over the captaincy.

All-rounder Cameron Green was recently pulled out from the ODI lineup for their ODI contests against India as a preventive step because of an abdominal issue.

He labeled it as a "slight concern and mentioned that he'll feature in the state-level matches, so will be "in a good place to be ready to bowl."

"We put so much time has gone into creating the schedule for him to participate for the first Test as an all-rounder," the selector detailed.

"He was only going to play the starting games regardless. The way he swings the willow in shorter formats, if it causes any delay for a short period, the choice was made to approach this more conservatively."
