During an inauguration day in his new role, Zohran Mamdani vowed to “reimagine” New York City, ushering in “a different age” and an ambitious commencement to his term.

A Historic Figure

The young political star, who was a virtually unknown state assemblyman, has become the city's first Muslim mayor. He also made history by being the inaugural to be take the oath of office using the Qur'an.

“A time such as this comes rarely and even more uncommon is it that the citizens whose hands are upon the controls for transformation,” Mamdani added.

Rejecting counsel to be modest, the mayor declared: “I will do no such thing. The only expectation I seek to change is that of limited ambitions. Beginning today we will rule boldly and broadly.”

Adhering to Socialist Convictions

Mamdani did not shy away from his political ideology. “I was elected as a democratic socialist and I will govern as one. I will not compromise my ideals for worry of being called extreme,” he proclaimed to loud cheers.

The inauguration was a dual event, starting with a midnight oath-taking in a disused subway station. He was officially inaugurated on the front steps of city hall by political ally Bernie Sanders, who spoke of Mamdani's election as a victory over powerful interests.

A Sweeping Blueprint

Mamdani now begins one of the most demanding jobs in American politics, with a agenda including:

• Free childcare
• No-cost bus transit
• A rent freeze for nearly 1 million households
• A trial program of municipally-operated grocery stores

The estimated $10 billion expense of these programs may prove difficult to secure. Mamdani has pledged to tax more heavily the wealthiest New Yorkers and big business. However, as a municipality subject to the state government, he will require the backing of Governor Kathy Hochul.

Facing Political Dynamics

The new mayor must contend with skepticism from some members of the Jewish community concerned about his past criticisms regarding Israel. Sensitivities were revealed during the transition when a senior aide resigned over controversial past comments.

Mamdani has moved to smooth over these tensions by persuading Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to remain, avoiding the optics of losing a Jewish police chief.

On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has labeled Mamdani a “socialist” and warned of withholding government money. Despite this, a recent encounter between the two was reportedly unexpectedly cordial.

The Fundamental Tests of Leadership

Traditionally, New York mayors are judged on their success in providing city upkeep: trash collection, reducing the rat infestation, fixing roadways, and making sure reliable transit service.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams touted his administration's anti-crime efforts, pointing to historically low numbers of homicides and shootings in 2025, with murders reported.

As his administration starts, Mamdani and his wife will move from their Astoria apartment to the historic Gracie Mansion. The previous occupant offered a quirky piece of advice about a reputed friendly ghost in the home, which reportedly only troubles those who fail to “do right by the city.”

Mamdani ended his address with a direct declaration: “The work has only just begun.”
