Together Has Debuted on Streaming, and It Could Strengthen or Shatter Your Relationship.

Here's a test for long-term couples who enjoy scary movies: Settle in with your significant other and watch Together. The independent film success of 2025 has now made its launch on a streaming platform on Hulu. On the surface, it might appear like standard physical horror, but within Together exists a profound contemplation about how we choose to love our partners.

A Debut Feature Investigating Relationship Dynamics

Together is the first full-length movie for director Michael Shanks. It stars the real-life married couple Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Millie and Tim, an unmarried couple that have stayed together for over ten years. United in marriage in real life in 2017, Franco and Brie bring a unique chemistry to their roles, expertly portraying both the joys and frustrations of a long-term relationship.

The plot begins when Tim and Millie relocate from the metropolis to the countryside for professional reasons. A familiar plot device, of course, but that’s largely where the tropes conclude. Together evolves into as much a examination of mental states of the partnership as it is a film about physical terror.

A Paranormal Spark

While trekking near their rural residence, a tempest descends, and Millie and Tim fall into an underground cave. After a night spent there and finally finding a way out, a strange force begins influencing the pair. This force induces a otherworldly bond between them that goes well past simple connection.

The complete narrative is a slow burn of scares, interspersing moments of dreamlike terrors, unsettling (but not excessively graphic) physical transformations, and genuinely funny interactions (sometimes in the middle of something grotesque). Shanks skillfully blends these components expertly and delivers them in a slowly mounting sense of impending doom.

Layered Performances

A great deal of Together is only the two lead actors, and they skillfully illustrate numerous complexities to the partnership at the film's core. Her self-assurance and feeling of intimacy is deteriorating due to a emotional and physical gap. Her underlying frustration of Tim for his hesitance to focus on anything other than his failing musical ambitions slowly bubbles to the surface.

Conversely, Tim senses confinement and cut off by Millie, who’s the reason they’ve relocated rural and far away from his support system. He fears the concept of utterly sacrificing his sense of self in Millie. This fear is amplified by the reality he can’t drive and is dependent on Millie for getting around.

Shanks’ smartest move is that he refrains from painting Tim or Millie the clear bad guy.

Both characters face the sort of issues that arise in long-term unions over a long period. Deep down, they continue to care for each other. They still laugh together, offer support, and open up at times. But below this facade, there’s an persistent current of uncertainty about their relationship.

Thematic Depth

While the otherworldly presence in Together represent these anxieties of excessive reliance and totally devoting oneself to another person, the symbolism does not come across as hamfisted or heavy-handed. Instead, these visceral horror elements offer a brilliant analogue to the interpersonal storytelling. Both the horror and the drama serve the other symbiotically.

A Debated Finale

Together’s conclusion, which remains unspoiled, has created disagreement on the film’s ultimate message about unhealthy partnerships. Reports indicate that those not in relationships have understood the narrative as a powerful case for avoiding commitment. Meanwhile, some couples having disagreements found that the film ultimately assisted them make up.

Whether you’re single or coupled up, your own response could act as a revealing measure of how you view relationships. Will the ending sow a sense of discomfort and fear, or a positive outlook on love? Will you identify in one of the characters and yell at the screen, or simply glance toward your other half and say, “We could get through that together”?

Whatever the case may be, Together is an experiment you can embark on at this very moment.

Together is currently playing on Hulu's platform as of this moment.
